São Paulo – The League of Arab States celebrated its 80th anniversary in an event at its headquarters in Brasília this Tuesday (3). The meeting was attended by Brazilian government officials, diplomats, and of the Arab community. Also ing the reception hosted by the Arab League’s ambassador in Brazil, Qais Shqair, was the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce’s International Relations vice president and secretary-general, Mohamad Mourad.
In a statement issued by The Arab League mission in Brasília, the organization established on March 22, 1945 in Cairo, Egypt said it was created to promote cooperation and solidarity among Arab countries. It also works to build socioeconomic, cultural, and political relations between Arab countries, with Palestine “at the top of its agenda.”
In his address, Shqair remarked that Latin America and Brazil have always among the Arab League’s priorities. As early as 1947, an Arab League mission traveled to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, in Brazil, and to cities in 13 other Latin countries. Shqair also referenced two articles of his featured in ANBA, where he outlines the work and the results achieved by the Arab League mission in Brazil.
“As it relates to our amiable relations with the Federal Republic of Brazil, the Arab League Secretariat General has been engaging in political consultations with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to find the right approach to enhancing cooperation in all fields,” the diplomat said in his address.
The event was attended by the dean of the Council of Arab Ambassadors and ambassador of Palestine in Brasília, Ibrahim Alzeben, the ambassadors of Egypt, Mai Taha Khalil, and of Syria, Rania Alhaj Ali, the ambassadors of Jordan, Maen Masadeh, of Qatar, Ahmed Alshebani, of Tunisia, Nabil Lakhal, of Kuwait, Talal Rashed Almansour, of Bahrein, Bader Abbas Alhelaibi, and of Sudan, Ahmed Eltigani Mohamed Swar; the chargés d’affaires of Lebanon, George El Jallad, of Mauritania, Ahmed Hamed, and of Iraq, Firas Hassan Hashim Al-Hammadany, among other Arab diplomatic officials in Brasília, and the director of the Middle East Department at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Clélio Nivaldo Crippa Filho.
