São Paulo – Iraq is implementing a strategy together with the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to enhance local food production, reduce imports, achieve wheat self-sufficiency, and farmers and agricultural workers.
The national food security strategy was the subject of a statement sent to Iraqi state news agency INA by the Media Office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, following his meeting with FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu on Sunday (25). Al-Sudani said that the strategy serves as a reference for t work with the FAO on the fronts mentioned above.
At the meeting with the director-general, the minister also discussed addressing climate change, which, he stressed, has affected the environment and caused water scarcity and the spread desertification. The Iraqi official emphasized the importance of cooperating with the FAO to implement the recommendations of the 2021 Baghdad International Water Conference.
Dongyu spoke about the readiness to launch a project to enhance the country’s ability to confront climate change, funded by several parties, including Iraq and the FAO, with a total budget approaching USD 40 million. They also discussed other conferences, the low-carbon economy, technology, small businesses, youth empowerment, and the role of women.
